While the book’s choice of historical figures is unsurprising, inserting an elephant into colonial America may strike readers as amusing and cute.
Pilgrims’ Pride emphasizes the importance of religious liberty, hard work, and having a spirit of discovery and innovation. For instance, in Maryland Ellis witnesses the arrival of colonists who want to practice their Catholic faith freely. Thus, the book communicates themes that conservatives and libertarians would want their children to understand.
This Christmas, I recommend you get Land of the Pilgrims’ Pride for your loved one. You may also want to get Sweet Land of Liberty because your little one will enjoy Ellis the Elephant and Pilgrims’ Pride.
